The team at Yorkshire Pudd are cheering on our beloved city of Hull after it was named City of Culture 2017 this week.

We always rejoice in reasons to bring our great county to attention and now Hull is about to get its time to shine.

Upon hearing the news, the city’s council leader Stephen Brady said it was a chance to show the world what the great city had to offer. And while we know there are many gems, we’re going to let you in on what we consider the top food and drink delights about the UK’s City of Culture 2017.

Best for: Fish and chips – Kingfisher
As with every seaside town’s delicacy, pinning down which is the very best fish and chips in Hull is going to be tricky. But the Kingfisher chain takes number one spot for us, thanks to its succulent and ultra-fresh fish and light and crispy batter, not to mention the fluffy and hearty chips.

Best for: Brunch and deli-style grub – Fields Deli & Coffee
We might expect to see more establishments such as Fields in the coming years, thanks to Hull’s new-found status. But for now, there are fewer than we would like. This place is perfect for those who have been yearning for the city to become one that is ‘coming out of the shadows’, in the words of City of Culture panel chairman and TV producer Phil Redmond. Expect homemade produce, brunch, afternoon tea, cheeses and olives. That kinda thing.

Best for: Dinner with a view – The Two Rivers Restaurant, The Deep
When we say ‘view’, it’s actually of the underwater variety. If you’re wondering where to eat when visiting The Deep, or in fact anywhere in Hull, you’ll be hard pressed to find a quirkier setting. Open Friday and Saturday evenings, you will be surrounded by aqua life while enjoying ‘Mediterranean menu with a Yorkshire twist.’ A real treat for children.

Best for: Ale – The Wellington Inn
While this traditional pub might not look much, according to CAMRA, which voted it Hull Pub of the Year in 2012, it is worth a visit for its ale alone. Now a brew-pub, this friendly haunt is a must for beer-lovers, who can sample up to about 11 different beers from its pumps.

Best for: Location and local produce – The Wilson
With the mantra ‘best of British’ and its use of the finest local produce, not to mention its marina-side setting, this place is perfect for all the family. It has it all – lunch menu, evening menu, children’s menu, impressive wine list, splendid dessert menu and wonderful al fresco dining in summer.
