It’s official, York is the very best place to live in the UK, the findings by The Sunday Times talk mainly around York’s heritage and hi-tech but there is something that York also has in an absolute abundance, amazing restaurants.
My latest trip there combines a much needed catch up with friends together with a return visit to The Grand Hotel, an iconic building in the heart of the city that boasts that it’s the only 5 star hotel in Yorkshire, albeit I predict that will change very very soon, guess who?
To be truly 5 star you have to offer 5 star food and with 2 exceptional restaurants in your repertoire it’s easy to see why The Grand Hotel is so popular.
We’re here to visit The Rise Bar & Restaurant which offers a modern cuisine across a new ‘small plate’ concept, allowing guests to enjoy a feast of sharing dishes in an immersive and social dining experience.
The Rise Bar & Restaurant is an incredibly vast restaurant which in it’s self creates the only issue of the evening, it’s Saturday night and it feels rather empty, the central focal point, the impressive open kitchen, does however create some atmosphere, but it’s limited.
The recommendation for the ‘small plate’ concept is 4 dishes per person, playing straight into my desire to experience as many dishes as I possibly can, where the restaurant may lack in atmosphere they certainly make up for it in terms of flavour.

Grilled Tiger Prawns with Smoked Paprika Mayo
Charred Sweet Potato, Walnut Pesto Parmesan & Balsamic
Fried Duck Egg, Wild Mushrooms, Spinach and Truffle Dressing
Braised Pork Cheeks, Salt Baked Piccolo Parsnip
Crisp Pork Belly, Pork Broth, Roasted Shallot, Baby Leek, Pickled Shimeji Mushroom
Charred Octopus, Fennel Salad, Capers & Aioi
I’m in two minds about the small plates concept, whilst relaxed tapas may work in Spain with a large glass of Red, dishes of this quality in a more formal setting shared between 4 of us means you only get to experience a very small proportion, albeit where would you get to experience an array of combinations like this, in one meal?
The Rise delivers a solid dinning experience and is certainly one to consider especially if you’re staying in the hotel and don’t want to venture out.
