If anyone is allowed to be fussy about a Yorkshire pudding, it is probably the person who has won the world championship twice. But a great Sunday roast is never about one oversized pudding sitting on an average plate. The meat, roast potatoes, vegetables, gravy, service and setting all have to work together.
This is our tried-and-tested guide to the best Sunday roasts in Yorkshire. Every recommendation comes from a meal Yorkshire Pudd has actually eaten and reviewed. We have included the date of our visit because menus, chefs and prices change; always check the restaurant’s current Sunday offering before booking.
The best Sunday roasts in Yorkshire at a glance
| Restaurant | Area | Best for | Our visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Fleece Countryside Inn | Barkisland, near Ripponden | The strongest traditional all-rounder | January 2026 |
| Clocktower at Rudding Park | Harrogate | A polished special occasion | February 2026 |
| Roots York | York | An inventive Sunday feast | February 2020 |
| Browns Leeds | Leeds city centre | A reliable central option | August 2018 |
1. The Fleece Countryside Inn, Barkisland
Best for: a destination pub Sunday lunch that still feels properly Yorkshire.
The Fleece is our current benchmark. The approach through Calderdale, the Yorkshire-stone building and the view across the countryside set the mood before you have even ordered. More importantly, the kitchen follows through.
On our January 2026 visit, the beef arrived pink, rested and full of flavour. The potatoes and vegetables were treated as part of the dish rather than obligatory support, while the glossy, deeply developed jus tied the plate together. The Yorkshire pudding was generous, crisp at the edges and soft within. That balance matters: a pudding should hold gravy without eating like a dry bowl.
Service was warm and assured, the wine list was thoughtfully put together and the sticky toffee pudding was worth saving room for. Read our full Fleece Countryside Inn Sunday lunch review.
Yorkshire Pudd verdict: the first place we would send somebody asking for a classic roast worth travelling for.
2. Clocktower Restaurant at Rudding Park, Harrogate
Best for: birthdays, anniversaries and anyone who wants their roast with polished service.
Clocktower turns Sunday lunch into a complete occasion. The dining room is calm and elegant, and the service is precise without becoming stiff. Our February 2026 meal centred on roast Aberdeen Angus beef served family-style, with excellent roast potatoes, caramelised seasonal vegetables and a particularly strong cauliflower cheese.
The Yorkshire pudding was a little softer than our ideal, but the beef and bold jus delivered, and the Yorkshire rhubarb crumble made a confident finish. This is premium territory, so you are paying for the surroundings and service as well as the cooking.

Yorkshire Pudd verdict: the best choice here when the setting and sense of occasion matter as much as the roast itself.
3. Roots York
Best for: diners who want Sunday lunch reimagined rather than repeated.
Roots did not simply improve the familiar pub roast when we visited in 2020; it pulled the whole idea apart and rebuilt it as a multi-course Sunday feast. The main event paired brioche-treacle-glazed chicken with buttermilk thigh, duck-fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and creamed leeks.
That dish kept the comfort and generosity of Sunday lunch while replacing routine with invention. Earlier courses brought the same farm-led thinking to bread, broth, mushrooms and cured ingredients, so the roast felt like part of a journey rather than a plate dropped in isolation.
Our visit is older than the other leading entries in this guide and Roots evolves continually. Treat the review as a record of why it made such an impression, then check the current format before booking. Read our Roots York Sunday feast review.
Yorkshire Pudd verdict: the most creative Sunday experience we have tried in Yorkshire.
4. Browns Leeds
Best for: a central Leeds roast when convenience, atmosphere and dependable service all matter.
Browns earned its place in our notebook with a proper plate of roast beef, a duck-fat Yorkshire pudding, roast shallot, horseradish crème fraîche and gravy with genuine depth. The beef was cooked further than we would choose, but the complete experience was reliable and well suited to a city-centre Sunday.
Our original visit was in 2018, so this is the entry that most needs a fresh check before we call it current. The location remains useful for a day in Leeds, but confirm the latest menu, prices and serving times directly with the restaurant.

Yorkshire Pudd verdict: a practical city-centre choice, with a revisit needed to test whether it still belongs among Yorkshire’s best.
What about the Boothwood Inn?
A useful guide should say where a meal fell short as well as where it succeeded. The Boothwood Inn in Rishworth has an excellent moorland setting, a welcoming bar and a menu full of promise, but our 2026 roast suffered from under-seasoning, a cold Yorkshire pudding, plain vegetables and gravy without enough body.
The service team recognised the delays and the owner listened to our feedback, so we did not write the venue off. It simply has not earned a place in the best list yet. Read our honest Boothwood Inn Sunday lunch review for the full context.
How we judge a great Yorkshire Sunday roast
The Yorkshire pudding
It needs crisp, well-coloured edges, enough structure to stand up to gravy and a soft interior. Size is impressive only when the texture and flavour are right. At home, our award-winning Yorkshire pudding recipe uses smoking-hot fat and a properly heated tin to create that rise.
The gravy
Gravy should carry the plate. We look for savoury depth, body and a finish that tastes built rather than mixed. Thin brown liquid cannot rescue dry meat or under-seasoned vegetables.
The roast potatoes
A great roast potato has an audible shell and a fluffy centre. It should taste seasoned in its own right, not rely on gravy for personality.
The meat and alternatives
Beef should arrive cooked as promised and properly rested. Chicken needs crisp skin and moist meat. A vegetarian roast deserves the same attention and generosity as the meat options, not a last-minute substitute surrounded by side dishes.
The whole Sunday experience
Parking, welcome, timing, drinks and the pace of service all matter. Sunday lunch is often the week’s shared meal; feeling rushed or forgotten can undo very good cooking.
How to choose the right Sunday roast
- For a traditional country-pub roast: start with The Fleece.
- For a celebration: choose Clocktower at Rudding Park.
- For something inventive: check the current Sunday format at Roots York.
- For central Leeds convenience: Browns is the practical option, subject to a current-menu check.
Book ahead for Sunday lunchtime, ask whether sides such as cauliflower cheese are included, and confirm how the kitchen serves beef if you have a strong preference. If allergies or dietary requirements matter, contact the restaurant directly rather than relying on an old online menu.

Help us keep the list honest
This guide will grow only when a roast earns its place. If you know a Yorkshire pub or restaurant that deserves testing, send the recommendation to info@yorkshirepudd.co.uk. We are interested in the whole plate, not just the biggest Yorkshire pudding in the room.
