The Secret to Graham’s Ices’ Award-Winning Mr Whippy Soft Serve Ice Cream

Graham’s Ices Ltd, a York-based ice cream van business run by Graham and Maggie Rush, has once again been awarded one of the top awards at the National Ice Cream Competition 2023 for their delicious Mr Whippy soft-serve vanilla ice cream.

This is the second consecutive year that they have won the Silver Challenge Cup, making it a two-scoop triumph!

The National Ice Cream Competition is the biggest event in the UK ice cream industry and is often referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of ice cream awards. The competition is run by the Ice Cream Alliance, the trade association for the industry in the UK, and has been running for 78 years.

Hundreds of ice cream products are submitted across thirteen categories ranging from Best Vanilla to ‘Alternative’ category products which include those free from the top 14 allergens, dairy-free, low-fat, high-protein, no-sugar, and others.

Submissions are judged blind by ice cream experts, making the results the most prestigious in the country. After a few difficult years for the ice cream industry, businesses are bouncing back with gusto, and Graham’s Ices is proof of that with the quality of the product that won this prestigious award two years running.

Where can we find award-winning Mr Whippy?

For those looking to enjoy the award-winning dessert, Graham’s Ices operates five ice cream vans and can be found near the River Ouse just outside York City Centre.

They are also available for all types of events and are regularly asked to visit local schools to provide a treat for staff and students.

To make their delicious soft serve ice cream, Graham’s Ices uses a Mr Whippy machine and a special Mr Whippy ice cream mix to ensure the perfect texture and flavour.

So what exactly is Mr Whippy ice cream made out of?

The classic Mr Whippy recipe is made up of milk, sugar, cream, and whey powder. These ingredients are mixed together and then frozen at a very low temperature while being churned.

This process creates a smooth and creamy texture that is synonymous with Mr Whippy ice cream.

A Whippy History

The Mr Whippy ice cream brand was founded in the UK in the 1950s by Italian businessman John Carrello. Since then, it has become a staple of the British ice cream scene and is enjoyed by people of all ages.

The oldest ice cream company in the UK is Wall’s Ice Cream, founded in 1786 by Richard Wall in London and still operating today under the ownership of Unilever.

Wall’s Ice Cream is known for its classic ice cream flavours such as vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate, as well as its popular ice cream bars and lollies.
